[RC] pellet diet - Lucy Chaplin TrumbullAt the risk of adding a "me too" post to this thread, the barn where we used to board our horses fed primary pellets, together with a small bit of hay on the side. The guy who ran the boarding place said that when they made the switch from straight hay, the incidents of colic went way down. There were probably 60-80 horses on the place, most of them on small dry-lot paddocks. Our horses lived there for three years with no problems on this diet - including when I first started riding Provo in 50s - and he always seemed to have plenty of energy (my arms would tell me so <sigh>). The pellets they fed were "Elk Grove Stable Mix", which come from a local mill, but seem to be found in the Bay Area as well as the Sacramento Valley and surrounds. Don't know if they supply as far south as you, Catfish? but maybe you can pick some up if you come up this way to visit? Nick had Zayante on these pellets when he was staying at his place, and then when Zay went back to Jackie, Nick and Judy would supply her, since she couldn't get them. Lacey's Arabians down the road from me also feed Elk Grove to their stalled horses (and poss. as a supplement feed to their pastured horses?) - I can see the vat when I drive past. I feed mostly hay now, but have occasionally fed these pellets when I got paranoid about the horse eating alf. at rides and wanted to have some alf. bugs up and running in its innards beforehand. These pellets aren't specifically "alfalfa pellets" as they also have grass hay in them (as well as "other stuff"), but looking at the label, I'm guessing alf. is the main "hay" part of them. They are "pinky finger" sized. Oh - and they are certified weed free, which is another benefit if you go to places that require that. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Lucy Chaplin Trumbull elsietee AT foothill DOT net Repotted english person in the Sierra foothills, California * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
