[RC] Best Hoof Boots for Trail Riding - Don Huston

Hi Karen,
Actually the question is "which hoof boot can you get to stay on your horse?" Just like people, not all horses can use all boots. I have used Old Macs on all 4's for 3 years in endurance and have modified them to the point that I got virtually no rubbing after 65 miles June 4, 50 mi Oct 1 and 50 mi Oct 15 but I ride slow in the bottom third. Bannister & Chaton are getting equally good results with Epics and they ride faster. I have never lost or broken an altered boot and they last 6-7 races then I use them for hacking and trailering. For trail riding even 3-4 hours a standard Old Mac or Epic should work just fine. If you decide to try the Macs do not tighten the inside strap. It must be loose enough to run your finger all around the coronet band. "It will never stay on" you think, but it does! There are a lot of tricks to a good fit so after you decide on a boot feel free to ask some more. Good Luck

Don Huston
