This action causes the left front to take a fraction of a second longer to hit the ground than does the right front in its stride. When he is fresh and in good condition he manages the timing without any apparent problem. But as he tires, or after a lay-off, his doesn't do such a good job, "steps in holes" with his right rear and in recovering from the misstep, often nicks the inside of his left rear fetlock.
