[RC] How much hay to feed - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Sharon Hahn sharon.hahn@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== I like to feed horses free-choice grass hay. This was even recommended to me by the vet for post-colic surgery (after a week or two of increasing gradually). The only reason to cut back would be if the horse is getting fat (or maybe if good hay is unavailable or too expensive - but you can save a lot of money on supplements, feed, and vet bills by insisting on quality hay!) _____________________ VAL WROTE: With a horse with limited turnout recovering from an injury...and stalled at night...how much hay is sufficient while being stalled? She is really good in the stall BTW. Stall time is approx 12 hours (evening to AM) Hay type is Orchard Grass I've been giving her 4 flakes which seems to last her throughout the night. Sometimes she'll eat it all, but not always. My friend feels I should only give her 2 flakes to see her thru the night. I personally don't feel this is quite enough...too much time with nothing to eat at all if she goes thru the 2 flakes too quickly. Opinions sought as to how much I should/shouldn't be feeding her. In the AM she does get 2 flakes of hay and her BP mash before being turned out separately in an approx 35 x 50 foot electric pen in a grassy area. I move the pen every 4 days to fresh grass. TIA for your opinions...Val + Sania =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
