Re: [RC] Heart Rate monitor usage - rdcarrieYou might try replacing the battery in the receiver...when mine started to go out, the first sign was wacky readings like that. Also, check to see if your girth is hanging loose...that'll give you some really wild readings (like the "OMG my horse is about to explode!" HR of 230 at a walk, followed by the "OMG, he's dead!" HR of 31 at a fast trot <G>).
As for riding without one...I usually use one, but when my HRM watch died (no hope of resurrection), I did a number of 50s without one before finally breaking down and buying a new one. By that time, I pretty much knew how fast that horse pulsed down, and did fine (never could remember to carry my stethoscope, so just came in, let him drink, and walked into the P&R box and he'd be down). You can either carry a stethoscope with you, or, take the pulse on the inside of the front leg near the knee (radial pulse??) with your fingers. Pretty easy to feel once you find it.

Why or why not? I'd like to hear especially from 50+ milers out there if you use them.. My HRM recently went wacko on me and with finances being tight, I'm hesitant on purchasing again. Especially since the last few months or so we've survived without one. The one I was using would give me extremely high numbers at a trot (180+, not normal) that would then drop down into the 70-80s range at a walk.. I can't figure out if it's electrical interference, lack of contact, or just general malfunction.. so I'm trying to figure out if I really *need* one, especially now that I'm moving into the 50s (hopefully).
