[RC] Feeding HOrses - Patti KuvikHi Sandy- You want to figure your horses' protein needs in grams based on age, weight, use and reproductive status rather than in "percent". You can use the tables on Equi-Analytical's website to see the requirements http://www.equi-analytical.com/PuttingResultsToWork/Nutrient_Requirements/default.asp these are a "quick look up" of the NRC (National Research Council) guidelines for the nutrient requirements of horses. The current guidelines are from 1989 and represent "minimum" requirements; they are currently undergoing revision due out end of this year but protein needs are one of the few that aren't likely to change much. Based on these, a "typical" 400kg (880lb) horse in moderate work requires 804 grams of crude protein/day (and 20.1Mcal DE - digestible energy). See Susan Garlinghouse's article at http://www.shady-acres.com/susan/alfalfa.shtml for a good discussion of alfalfa in the ration. Patti Kuvik Vail AZ From: sandy rovane <blanketlady@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [RC] Feeding HOrses I recently moved and have had to switch my feeding program because of the winter availability of >grass hay. What percentage of protein should I be feeding horses. I don't like feeding alfalfa but >that is basically what is availabe short of paying $15 per bale. My 20 year old is so hot on alfalfa it is impossible to ride him. They are worked weekly about 30 miles, live in the barn at night and >have blankets for warmth. Aged 14,15, 21.
