Re: [RC] Why not more 100's? - Dabney Finch

I've been asking (pleading with) our PS RMs for years to put on 100s and been told it's not cost effective and it's too hard to get volunteers (staying up all night's really not fun if you're not riding). These are totally fair reasons not to put on a 100 and it all comes back to what Truman said--too few riders.

I have to say, however, that one of these RMs, Terry Wooley Howe, announced last year she was going to start putting on an annual 100--with full awareness of these drawbacks-- for the sole purpose of providing a venue for PS riders to compete in 100s. (I presume so they might fare better than their heretofore rather miserable showing in the Pan Ams and internationally. Well, and even nationally. I haven't checked it, but I believe this year was the first in at least a while that a PS rider--Linda Morelli--placed in the National 100 Mile Top Ten.)

I think Terry deserves tremendous kuddos for joining the elite rank of those RMs in our sport who "give back" by putting on 100s. We should support her in every way we can. So "Just Enter!!"

No, it is not the AERC that needs to do anything. It's supply and demand. If you offer a ride and people don't show up - you don't offer it any longer. If the riders want more rides, they damn well better go ride the ones that are available. If they do that the ride managers will respond.

**Actually, there are three in the west, as Tevis is not yet listed on the calendar.

100's or is it the ride managers that they should be encouraging to put more 100's on! I'm hoping that AERC can come up with a way to encourage and help ride managers to hold more 100s. '

**Interesting point of view, and do you have any suggestions?

"There's probably alot of reasons that I'm not aware of why ride managers aren't holding as many 100 mile rides as they used to."

**Two 100 milers from the West that I know about that have been lost have been the Red Rock 100 and the Washoe 100. The "whys" though, I'm not sure of.

Intersting post worth chewing on,
thanks,
Maureen
