Re: [RC] riding in tennis shoes - Carol Suggs

I love the comfort of tennis shoes as well, but please be careful about
riding in tennis shoes or the boots now that have the crepe soles. I think
it is very important to be comfortable but safe.

Tennis Shoes and Crepe Soled boots do not allow your foot to slip freely
from the stirrups and you may potentially have a problem with this. I have
witnessed this problem on several occassions and have made a mental note to
myself not to allow myself or any of my 4h kids to ride with tennis shoes or
crepe sole boots. Plus tennis shoes do not have a heel so you could also
potentially put your foot all the way thru the stirrup which would again
cause a problem.

With the advancement in boot technology I am sure that you can find a comfy
pair of appropriate riding boots out there that will be safe yet
comfortable. There are some horse riding sneakers out there that have a
little heel on them, you might try those. But I am still against those
because they do not have a slick bottom to allow quick release.

Ride Safe.

I have recently returned to riding in tennis shoes. I did this as a teenager
'cause I didn't have boots, now I find it much more comfortable. I was
wondering as I am going to be trying out english style saddles for the first
time if any of the quick release stirrups have been shown to be safer? What
about those stirrup cages I have seen on many websites? The english stirrups
seem much thinner than stock western and I am concerned about slippage.

I also saw some posts, more than a year ago, about avoiding elastic girths
with horses that have difficulty with saddles sliding back and forth. I
can't remember the details but could use any advice as this is a major
concern for my mare and I want to avoid having to go with breast collar in
front and crupper in back to keep the saddle in place. How can I choose a
girth that will help stablize an english(dressage) saddle on her? I will be
getting professional help with the fitting of the saddle.

Thanks in advance, Cyndi
