The best defense is to stay in groups of 3 or less. I've found that if there are 4 riders, the 4th gets stung (at the pace we ride). One day we started out with 6 riders. The 4th on back hit bees twice and had been stung. I suggested we break up into two groups with about 10 minutes between us. Nobody else got stung that day. I think when the horses start crossing the hole it takes a couple of horses before they decide enough's enough and come after you. Personally, I like to ride in the lead in August/Sept. You have to be able to handle hitting spiderwebs with your face but you don't get stung. 2nd in line is a nice spot if you can hold onto it...spider webs taken down by rider #1, horse stays motivated by the screaming of rider number 4.
