RE: [RC] mentoring - Jim HollandI concur....it's EASY to go fast....which is the mistake most "newbies" make because teaching your horse to go slow at the beginning is difficult. It's a lot easier to just "follow the herd". Once you teach him to go "slow and steady" at the pace you choose, it's EASY to speed up later. Give up your "Top Ten", your completion, your ego, whatever it takes to "train" your horse to deal with the excitement of a ride, however long it takes. Getting him to slow down after you go fast initially is a lot harder than teaching him to go slow first. A LOT of that mental conditioning should be done BEFORE your first ride. It's "pay me now, or pay me later". :) Good advice, Jonni! Jim, Sun of Dimanche+, and Mahada Magic Richard T. Long slow miles. Get the horse used to being out there for a long day, eating and drinking well on the trail. Speed, if desired, can come later.
