RE: [RC] Automatic Waterers - heidiAlso, if you have water pipes that run through a barn, above ground, they can also heat up in the sun, having warm to hot water coming out of them until they are ran for awhile. Indeed. But even more of a headache, in climates like ours, is that they would freeze. All of our automatic waterers are fed by pipes buried 6 feet down. Cool in summer, warm in winter... We bought one of the in tank water heaters, that fit in the drain hole of the trough, and it works great in the winter to prevent freezing. I used those for years. They tended to go out at the most inconvenient of times, and constituted much more threat with above-ground wiring. Got tired of extension cords, flipped breakers, and surprises...
