Rhodesian Ridgebacks can keep up with you on
trail....in fact mine "scouts" ahead of me...is rattlesnake wise...drinks out of
my water bottles...never interferes with the horses action, even when he trots
in the horse's shade. And then turns completely off (sleeps)
when you're done riding...but is up and ready to go again in a
heartbeat...whether is has been 30 minutes or 30 days!
They are shorthaired, clean themselves like a
cat, love their family and yet protect their home, barn, horses, etc. My
90 lb guy "bumps" the grandchildren to see if they tip over..if they don't tip,
he'll play with them...if they tip...he backs up and lays down beside
them. I love my guy....he goes EVERYwhere with me....even the Westin in
San Francisco....they allow dogs and have a wonderful Bay Area Ridge Trail right
across the street from the entrance to the hotel. My hardware store feeds
him cookies when we come in shopping....and he now recognizes the Golden Arches,
where he gets his (plain) double cheeseburger ($1.00) when we go to
town.
I lost my boxer of several years (Ramen) in late July. My plan is to find
a new dog in the spring. I need some ideas for breeds that are really good
around horses, grandkids and traveling to endurance rides. I know any breed
as well as pound dogs can be good but I guess I just need to hear some
success stories! Sure do miss my ole guy so I'm hoping by spring
I'll be ready for someone new.
thanks,
Diane
