Re: [RC] Feeding Oat hay - Laney HumphreyStraight oat hay is just fine, at least for my horses. As with any hay, I'd buy (or talk the grower into giving me) one bale as a test before shelling out big bucks for lots of it. Horse are picky about oat hay, as I'm sure they are about forage hay. If it was harvested after all the energy went into making the oat heads, they won't eat much of the stems which means a lot of waste (of hay and your money) and mess as the uneaten stems blow around. It also means they are eating a lot of grain and not fiber. A good test is to bite into a stem yourself. If it tastes sweet, it still has nutrients and the horses should like it. If it has no flavor, the nutrients have probably all gone into the seedheads.Laney Melody Wong wrote: What are your thoughts on feeding straight oat hay. I found a grower near my parents’ place that has this but no 3 or 4 way grain hay. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
