[RC] lubricant/grease used inside easyboot (epic) to preventchaffing? - Dreamweaver

So i was thinking of putting some lubricant/grease between the gaiter
and the hoof/hairline. Has anyone any experience using lubricants?
Does sand/dirt just stick to that area and cause worse chaffing?

I was also thinking of using a 1 size smaller back strap to gain more
distance between the hoof/hairline and the gaiter.

Comments, ideas, ... ?

Hi Jon -- I wouldn't put any lubricant of any type on the heelbulb area of the horse. That will likely soften it up, and make it even more susceptible to rubbing or bruising. If you could use a shorter heelstrap on the boot, and still get it on -- then you probably need a smaller size boot.

I have been cutting the heelstrap off of my boots completely, and it has been working quite well. I don't think the heelstrap needs to be there, I've ridden three horses so far without it and they are all doing fine without. Chief has done the most competition miles that way. He's done over 1200 miles from March thru August since going barefoot and while using the Epics.

Here is a link that has lots of photos of the boots, and video: http://members.tripod.com/ridephotos/ You can look and see how I'm using the boots. I take the plastic covers off of the teeth on the sides too, flatten those down and put four layers of duct tape over them. Probably not necessary unless you are doing a lot of miles/hours with the boots though.

There are new gaiters in the works, that should work even better. Eliminate the need for vetwrap. I'll report back after Bryce. Nothing like a 5 day ride to test stuff out! :)
