Re: [RC] light trucks for hauling... - Laney Humphrey

I agree and keep my fingers crossed that I'll always have enough parking space for all my vehicles!

When one is contemplating the choice of rigs for horse trailering and for the rest of the uses (for example going to work) one should consider the TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP, not just the cost of fuel for one of them.
Many years ago I looked at this and realized that since used trucks, cars and horse trailers are bargans in the USA, many times more is less.
I ended up with a small 35 mpg used automobile (~$6000), a 3/4 ton truck (~$9000) , and a used steel trailer (~$1000 , including new floor.). The fuel saved using the auto for work pretty much paid for the insurance on the truck. The whole package was still less than the cost of a fancy Brederup trailer, and an 18 mpg car or suv.
I of course did sacrifice the prestege that goes with owning fancy vehicles. On the other hand I did not have to worry about theft and vandalizm where I worked, which was not the nicest area of town.
