Re: [RC] 4runner and horse trailer - Kathy RamspottI do tow a 2 horse TALL bumper pull trailer with a '96 4-runner and have for about 5 years now. I do not do hills(well, mountains) and I don't do gravel hills. The truck is only a 2 wheel drive and I can't remember the last time I trailered more then 1 horse. It has worked OK for me but I did decide this year to start looking at trucks and after all these posts am heavily leaning towards the Chevy allison. We have a friend up the road who has an OLD Chevy dually diesel 4x4 that he is willing to sell me real reasonable but I am not mechanically inclined so leaning towards the new Chevy. If you plan on only towing one horse around town I'd say go for it. I too slept in the 4-runner many times. It isn't real comfortable, can hear a lot of noise and the windows 'sweat' like crazy whether its cold out or hot out. A lot of people gave me flack about the wheel base and blowing the transmission and all that who-ha but I am a very conservative driver and my horses are never more then 900 lbs. No problems breaking but I have also never gone over 70 while towing and usually stay around 50mph. One of the times I did haul two horses was a pregnant mare and the mare I had ridden at E. South Fork. I drove from there to SE Atlanta without a single problem and felt fine, never nervous. I want to go more places and go to the mountains so that is why I want a 4x4 Truck plus I want a LQ trailer some day. Hope this helps.
