RE: [RC] Girly Trucks - Alison FarrinWhat drove me crazy when we were truck shopping was that the sales people didn't know anything. Yes, they talked to my husband, I'm good at interrupting <G>. But I generally didn't have much to inject, as they couldn't answer the most basic questions. How many ft pounds of torque is the engine rated at? Um, I don't know, let me see if it says in the brochure What rear axle ratios are available? Well, this one here (reading the option sheet) has 410's. I don't know what else you can get. Let me get the brochure..... Finally found a fleet dealer in National City (South San Diego) who had answers! He sold a truck! I am still driving a 2000 Dodge Dually 3500, manual 6 speed tranny, 354 rear gears, dealer installed exhaust brake. At 5 years old and 80K miles (95% towing!) we have replaced brake pads. That's it. A girly truck is one that does not need work regularly, in my book! Change the oil and forget about it. That's my truck! Alison A. When I bought my first truck maybe 10 years ago, I expected to be snubbed and talked down to. So I did lots of research beforehand. When I walked in and described exactly what I was interested in seeing, I was always taken seriously and treated with respect. I don't know where you live; I live in CA & out here, at least in the urban areas, salespeople know better than to treat women customers less well than men. We may pay $3.24 for diesel but we get lotsa respect. Laney Mary Krauss wrote: When I went truck shopping a few years ago, I could not get a salesperson to talk to me. I started worrying that I hadn't showered after my run or had failed some other subtle hygiene test. This happened at 4 different dealerships. Please understand, I've bought all 4 of our previous cars with nary a problem. Finally I caught on: they simply could not believe that a woman could or would buy a truck without her husband around. Once my husband tagged along to the Chevy dealership, we were nearly trampled by eager salesmen. I enjoyed the moment when he pointed to me and said something to the effect of, "I'm just here for company; she's the one buying the truck." Even at that they kept addressing him.... I understand things have changed even in the past five years--the dealerships make their salespeople take gender lessons. Did you know it turns out that male buyers are more interested in looks than in performance? Who woulda' thunk?! And woman tend to ask technical questions about torque and engine size...... :-) Mary K-- who owns a boss gasoline powered truck but longs for a Girly Diesel.... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
