Jonni,

The stuff he runs is pretty ragged out.  He ran his
own for awhile (dozer was bought from the Forestry
Service and was a year younger than me -- and I'm 41).
The other equipment he ran in the lignite mine, for
subcontractors.  He's working mainly in the oilfield
now so again, it's older equipment -- including the
pickups.  

He knows that if he's broke down, he can't work (and
consequently, somebody doesn't get paid) so he knows
how to make do the best he can with what he's given to
work with.  

If there ever comes a time when you have to run old,
decrepit vehicles or equipment, this can give you an
idea of things to watch out for.  The newest vehicle
we have is a 97 Ford 3/4T that was in the mine.  It
was a "company truck" and now it's ours.  It was one
of the better ones out there.  All our tractors, and
the backhoe are over 20 years old and they smoke some.
They've all had a long, hard (but productive) life.

BTW, I've read your posts for a long time.  Do you
ever come ride at Kennard?  I'd like to meet you
sometime.

I have yet to ever see mine smoke.....and it has
been at max load going over
the grades on I-40, and also over the sierras on
I-80....no smoke. But I do
make sure it gets in for it's oil changes every 3000
miles, and they check
the filters each time too....
