Re: [RC] Cross-ties - Carol Suggs

I think the problem with cross ties is that for a horse that already has a
tie issue it ends up being made worse with cross ties because they are in a
nowhere to go situation. At our new barn we don't have any cross tie areas
but we did at the old barn and I used them without issue (but I had inner
tubes attatched to the rings on one side and a quick release on the other.)
However I have seen horses go bizerko in them before and as we all know when
a horse is having a wreck it never seems to be a "pretty wreck" or a "little
wreck". I agree it is a training issue...and if those of us feel we need
cross ties in our life we train our horses to accomodate them, just like we
train to hobble, train to tie, ect.

I got news for you, Ed -- if you ever tried to touch my cross ties I'd
chase
you out of my county with a shotgun. I have four sets in my 5 stall barn
and they are almost always in constant use for when we are harnessing up
the
carriage pair, or bathing/dressing the three foxhunters to have them ready
to arrive at the 7:30AM meet on time. Plus I use them to hold my ponies
when I'm shoeing, or pulling manes, or just teaching a pony to be patient
and wait their turn. Maybe it's the difference between east and west
but...you won't find a barn in the east without them. They are
indispensable
... and the next best thing to having a full time groom to hold your
horse.

If someone has a horse that has a problem with being groomed on cross
ties,
then that is a training issue. It is far safer to have a horse tied than
untied. All it takes is one second with your back turned to an untied
horse, and they can take off -- running havoc through a barn or simply
taking off out of sight, dashing into a road and running a very real risk
being hit by a car.

Not for me. I'll keep my wonderful cross ties, thank you very much.
