Re: [RC] How do you pick the horse - Splitters Creek ASHSHi Dot, these are the characteristics I look for and now breed for. Overall I like a nice athletic type, one that just reeks 'travel' and 'athlete'. One that's looking to the horizon. I know horses compete with leg faults but my preference is for faultless legs, in particular the front ones. Straight, clean, nice bone, good sized knees, tight well distinguished tendon, medium length and angle pasterns. Short canons and good length from hip to hock. Feet are just as important - good size, shape, concave and good hard quality. I like a big engine room - good angled shoulder, big wither and deep through the girth. I prefer a relatively compact back with well sprung ribs. I would look for horses with a nice length of rein and shape of neck, with lot of width under the jowel and big blowers, ultra extreme headed horses do not interest me. I have preference for horses with a kind eye. Regards Catherine.
