One very experience vet - retired now - once told me the horses he worried 
about were the "transition horses." That's those horses whose riders have 
decided to transition up - be it from the back of the pack to the middle of the 
pack or the middle of the pack to the front.

You have to "condition up" before attempting to "transition up".
