Re: [RC] tack and gear that worked on Tevis - Laney HumphreyHi Karen,I agree with Jonni that seat size has something to do with stirrup placement but I don't think it's the complete explanation. I also agree that, at least for the way I ride on the trail, I'm most comfortable if I can just see the tip of my toe beyond my knee. I think a lot of dressage based saddles put the foot a bit further back than that. Finally, both the type of terrain you are riding over and how you are used to riding make a big difference. I think for someone who does a lot of two pointing or hovering just out of the saddle, having the stirrup slightly forward makes sense because your center of gravity is most likely shifted slightly forward. That's also usually true going uphill. As Jonni says, if you're used to riding either hunt seat or western having your feet slightly forward feels natural. But if you are used to riding dressage having your feet right under you probably feels better. I rode in a Big Horn until I sold the horse it fitted. As I remember, the stirrups were a bit forward. That was a number of years ago. I should find one to try now and see how it feels. I do remember thinking the stirrups were a bit too far forward, but then I do have short legs. Mostly, I'm just glad there are so many well made saddles out there so we can each find out that works for us and our horse! And I know that Jonni spent months trying saddles to make sure her choice was just right.
