Re: [RC] interesting piece on west nile - DESERTRYDR1While this is an interesting story, it's another one of those misleading ones. It's not true that crows are the only or main cause of the spread of West Nile Virus. Lots of bird species are responsible. The reason that crows are such a big deal is that they DIE when they get West Nile. Most other bird species, except for ravens, magpies and some raptors, get it just as often. They just don't die! When dead crows are found, they can be tested to see if they had West Nile. In that sense they serve as an indicator species, showing that West Nile is present in the bird species in that area. Just goes to show how reporters can take a bit of scientific study and turn it into something entirely different! jeri =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
