Re: [RC] what to do with the old horse - Belinda RomanuskiFirst of all, we have a few senior equines. One 23 year old Standardbred who we've had for only 3 years. He will go all day, (not at an endurance pace) carrying me, 180lbs. He will go anywhere I point him, and his ground manners are great. Whether I am able to ride him again or not, he has earned his place in our pasutre. We also have a 27 year old Buckskin that my skinny husband loves to ride. The old horse still has a sparkle in nis eye, hence the name Sparky. I alos have a 20 year old mule who is one of the steadiest equines I ever had. One thing about these 3 guys, no one told them they are old. I could never part with any of them. They are, I think, happy living in our smal herd of 15 on 20 acres. I would not trust someone else to feed them like I do. I woulod also worry about someone riding them too hard. Many times children are much harder on horses than adults. I believe our three old guys earned their retirement, if and when they need it.Belinda =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
