Re: [RC] Feeding in Extremely Cold Weather - heidi

Yesterday I heard on the radio that the temperature in Embarrass, MN was
54 degrees below 0. It is 8 degrees in Missouri today and I was curious
about what people in 54 degree below temperatures do differently at
feeding time. How do you go about getting enough calories into horses
that are
unsheltered to keep them warm? How many calories a day does a 1000
horse need when the weather is above freezing vs. below? Bob

During spells that are apt to be sub-zero, we free-feed alfalfa hay to our
brood band, and you can just watch the consumption increase. They will
eat like there is no tomorrow, but provided they have the feed available,
they seem to do fine. Worst thing is if there is wind/blizzard
conditions--then they definitely need a wind break.

Water is the worst problem--either need heated waterers or need to make
sure that you get them on a regular daily program where they can come and
tank up, preferably on water that is somewhat warmish.
