RE: [RC] Heart Murmur - Linda CowlesA endurance riding friend, Stacy, had a wonderful gelding, Porter, who had occasional heart murmurs... Stacy was the worlds most conscientious rider, going way out of her way to ride with Porters safety in mind, yet he had a heart attack the morning after her successful completion of a 50 mile ride. Gavilan had a slight heart murmur once; his electrolytes had gotten out of balance. I've monitored it carefully since then and it hasn't reoccurred. I still check for it consistently. After Stacy's loss, I would never ignore a "routine" heart murmur! It may never come to anything, but they ARE an indication of our horses overall health. Linda Cowles Certified Hoof Care Provider WWW.HealthyHoof.Com HealthyHoof@xxxxxxxxxxx I had one out-of-region vet tell me that at one ride on my then 16 yo mare, at vet in. It never came up during the ride and no other ride vet ever mentioned it [or VERY experience PR person] in my region ever mentioned it. AND I had a pre-purchase done on her 4 months prior and my home vet [a DVM specialist] never said anything about it. I ignored it. Kristen in TXPlease Reply to: Lauretta tikitiki69@xxxxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== The last ride I took entered, I was told that Shaba had a slight heart murmur when we were doing our vet in. He has never had one before, and the vet told me that it was common for horses to sometimes have one when they get around age 16/17 (he is 16). Has anyone come across this, and is there anything you can do about it? Also, does this affect riding him at all? We currently do 50s and I am working him up to 100s. Would this be a reason to pull him ever? The vet said it is worth noting on his vet card at the start, but would not necessarily be a pull reason. Thanks Lauretta and Shaba (there is nothing about me that is a murmur. Anything I do is heard LOUD and CLEAR....will this mean I have to cut back on the Hostess Fruit Pies?>?? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
