[RC] Southwest (Creede) Colorado - rides2far

Just got back from a trip to Creede, Colorado (southwest corner) and
loved it. Took about 10 minutes to get used to the idea of cool mornings
and evenings and mid-days that were just sunny but no big deal as far as
heat goes. Just curious as to whether there are any ridecampers down in
that corner? Too late to ask for a ride, but still curious. My husband
was ready to take early retirement and stay but I don't think he's quite
got a visual of the winter conditions. >g< Since the area is surrounded
by 4 National Forests (96% federal land in that county) and most of that
was wilderness I'm guessing there's no races held near there. By the way,
Jim Holland, I bought you and Jerry & Diane Fruth gifts while there. It's
a decal for your truck that looks like the official US Forest Service
Dept. of Agriculture sticker, but when you actually look closer it's "US
Forest Circus Dept. of Aggravation" >g< I'm putting them in the mail
Monday so watch your mailbox. :-)

Tried to hike on the mountains and was amazed how loose the dirt & rocks
are on the steep slopes. I now have a better visual of how those horses
fall down the mountain at Tevis. :-P The amount of loose rock laying on
top of *all* the ground was pretty daunting. Hard to picture taking out
at a gallop across an open space, I could barely walk across it without
turning an ankle. Amazing to see Elk poop in places where I was almost
crawling to get up the mountain. It is pretty cool (literally*) to never
have a sweaty shirt sticking to your back no matter how far you hike.

By the way, the reason we ended up in Creede, which we never would have
known existed was a ridecamp post. Someone asked someone else to
recommend a Dude Ranch in Montana, I clicked on the link to the post
someone else sent recommending one...there was a link to "employment
opportunities" and the next thing I knew my 19 yr. old had a job at a
ranch in Colorado. :-P Now I don't know if we're going to get her
back...she's found out that the Western boys can *dance*! :-)

Josie would have killed to get to gallop her horse across the landscape
in New Mexico. I think we're going to have to try to get the horses out
there in the next year or two. Seems pretty do-able when you see a Dairy
Queen with a big sign that says "horse stalls" with an arrow to the back
of their parking lot (they were nice pipe corrals privided by Dairy
Queen), and rest areas along the freeway with corrals. Rode here this
morning and our trails looked like a South American Rain Forest to me.
Made me want to show some westerners around here. :-)
