Re: [RC] re: horse tricks --trail markings - Barbara McCraryI'm sure horses know which trail to take by smelling the horses that passed through previously. One time on Tevis, my first time to finish, there was an unexpected turnoff onto another trail, and the ribbon was maybe 100 feet down the correct trail (rather than on the corner.) The wrong trail went straight ahead, but my horse told me "no, we turn this way." I honored his instincts, and sure enough, there was the flag that I could not see from the junction.Barbara ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sisu West Ranch" <ranch@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, July 14, 2005 9:28 AM Subject: Re: [RC] re: horse tricks --trail markings I had a gelding that had learned to point pheasants, they scared him so he wanted to sniff them out. Later when he really got into endurance he would follow the trail with no prompting. I think that he smelled the other horses scent on the proper trail, but I can't be sure. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
