RE: [RC] re: horse tricks --trail markings - Linda CowlesI taught Shatirr to point at trail signs, marking ribbons and flour arrows after I got lost on a ride... I showed him the target (ribbon, sign or flour marker), asked him "put your nose on it" or "touch it" and rewarded him pith a carrot piece. After the third touch, he had the game mailed and became the worlds best backseat driver. ROFL imagining you trying to get through some of our VERY well marked rides w/o going over time on this horse if he stops and looks for a reward at every trail marking. --Coalfax, and Black Hills might be pretty hard for ya. --Well maybe Black Hills would be ok since the markings are mostly painted fiberglass poles so they might not trigger him putting his nose on each one. Heh! Heh! Heh! I had him put his nose on the first few, and after that he just pointed subtly, and there was no food reward every time he saw something. He knew the idea was to point at them. We have a few well marked trails here too, and he understood that clusters of dispersed markings were a unit, and got to the point where his point was pretty subtle if I was paying attention, saying "thanks" and patting him. It started out as a "trick" and turned into communication.
