Not really, UMECRA rules call for a 10 minute p/r.  At that time you have to meet 40 or you get a penalty.  A number of years ago we did research comparing 5 minute and 10 minute P/R.  They turned out to be statistically the same.
 
The trick is in the pacing, and conditioning of the horse.  You go at a proper pace, just faster than required to meet the time deadlines, and walk the last 2 miles into a check.  If you then pay proper attention to cooling, or blanketing, you can achieve a 40 pulse most of the time.
 
We have the ride sheets from the year Wendy won top CTR in MN to prove it.  Under UMECRA rules, you start with 400 points and loose points for P/R, gait changes, wounds, soreness, tiredness, filling,  missing time deadline, and unruly behaviour.  The winning lightweight riders will have 390-396 points left.
