Re: [RC] pulse question from RC guest - Sisu West Ranch
"... 40 or lower after a 4 minute hold seems very
unreasonable..."
Not really, UMECRA rules call for a 10 minute
p/r. At that time you have to meet 40 or you get a penalty. A number
of years ago we did research comparing 5 minute and 10 minute P/R. They
turned out to be statistically the same.
The trick is in the pacing, and conditioning of the
horse. You go at a proper pace, just faster than required to meet the time
deadlines, and walk the last 2 miles into a check. If you then pay proper
attention to cooling, or blanketing, you can achieve a 40 pulse most of the
time.
We have the ride sheets from the year Wendy won top
CTR in MN to prove it. Under UMECRA rules, you start with 400 points and
loose points for P/R, gait changes, wounds, soreness, tiredness, filling,
missing time deadline, and unruly behaviour. The winning lightweight
riders will have 390-396 points left.
