[RC] re: OT-definitely women only - Cindy CollinsWell, I had a vaginal hysterectomy, retaining my ovaries, in 1987. It was probably very poor medical advice, as I was quite young and had not had children. However, that's a whole "nuther" story. The surgery was a piece of cake. I probably way overdid, cause I had very little pain (or am too stupid to feel it). I rode the BH 100 successfully less than a month after the surgery. However, the pelvic floor weakness came back to haunt me with a vengeance. In 2001, while at the 2001 XP I began to prolapse, front and back. Actually, I'm sure it had been coming on for some time. Like the fool I am, I argued with doctors that I was fine and that it was just a urinary tract infection and went back and rode another day. And then, after I knew what was happening, I put off surgery until after the BH 100 that year. That surgery did not go smoothly or easily. They had to go back in and do more repair and I have lots of scar tissue and some permanent discomfort. It is only this summer that I finally feel back to my "normal" strength. I spent a year and a half doing physical therapy with a pelvic floor specialist to get here. So, part of the moral of the story is to get multiple opinions, use a really good doctor, do the physical therapy...in fact, demand it because we endurance riders need a different level of comeback fitness compared to many folks, and realize that 15 years older means you heal a lot slower! Good luck. Cindy =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
