Re: [RC] Big Horn vs. Tevis - Truman PrevattOn give me a break. 100 miles of sugar sand in the Ocala NF in 85 degrees and about 100% humidity with the winds off the warm Gulf of Mexico is a challenge. The OD in a heatwave is a challenge. The Tevis and Big Horn have their challenges. One ROC had an extremely low completion rate - and these were the best of the best.Say all you want about the Big Horns, Tevis, ODs, etc., I've done a few 100's and the hardest ride I've ever done was a 50 in CO. This was a month after I had finished the ROC in Utah in '96. The trail was fine but what happened along the way turned a pleasent endurance ride into an adventure that required galloping the last 15 miles - opening 7 gates along the way in order to make time! Lost shoes, easyboots that weren't, lost easyboots and having to repair easyboots on trail - on foot for 10 miles. Falling into a hole and trying to figure out my time zone much less my zip code. It's not just the trail. It's the trail, the weather and the luck of the day. That's what makes this sport so great - each ride can be it's very own an "adventure." When you cross the starting line - you never know if that is going to be a "piece of cake" or the "ride from hell." Truman In a message dated 6/16/2005 10:24:44 P.M.
