I use Equi-Spot on my mare every 14 days.  Mostly I use it 
to help with her midge allergies but it seems to help with
other flying and crawling beasties as well.  She gets some
flies on her but nowhere near as many as the other horses
at the boarding barn.  I've only found one tick so far
this year also.  And they are pretty bad here in OK already.
