RE: [RC] tack-up problems - heidiIt could definitely be that it is remembered pain. As I said, she came with this issue, so it's not something that I *caused* by how I tack or what tack I use. Since it got better towards the end of last ride season I would think that my tacking or my tack procedure is better than what she used to have - not worse. I went through this with my foundation stallion when I first got him. He had been ridden quite a bit, but he would shake and break out in a cold sweat when I went to saddle him. He didn't pull back like your mare does, but tied to a wall, he could squinch up and swap ends in the blink of an eye to avoid being saddled. He was also extremely cinchy. It took us three or four years to get past it, but we eventually did. I was just slow and gentle and patient with him, and he eventually learned that it didn't hurt anymore. Like your mare, he was fine once saddled--easy to mount, and no evidence of pain under saddle. He was one of the most athletic and honest horses I've ever ridden, and was truly a joy under saddle.
