Not sure what the laws are on the branding and stolen horses.  But, I used to work some sale barns in our area, and I can say that none of the 3 barns ever bothered to look for, or care if there was a brand/freeze mark on a horse going thru the sale.  All they wanted was the money from the sale.  But this was back when the killer prices were VERY high.   I never have gotten them because of it.  But, I will say, placing them in a highly seen area, like the rump beats the hidden spot under the mane that the Arabian people use.

Get your horses freeze branded! I
cannot emphasize this enough. All of my horses now carry a brand on there
rump for all to see.  A very small price to pay to insure the safe keeping
of your equine partner.
