[RC] The Great American Horse Race - JonniJody posted : >>>This looked like it was a huge, moving horse party!!! I realize that nothing like that will probably ever happen again, but I would bet it was sure a blast to those invovled. Something that would be a trip of a lifetime.<<< That is indeed a wonderful book, with great stories and photos. Those who participated, formed some wonderful stories to tell, and memories. In 2001, a group of riders left St. Joseph MO., for 8 weeks of riding the Pony Express trail with the end goal of Virginia City NV. 2000 miles, 50 miles per day. Dave Nicholson was at the GAHR, and organized these "modern" versions of that ride. While modern technology made much of this adventure easier than those who ride in 1976, so much of it was I am sure, the same. I crewed for a friend riding, and drove the rig to the next camp each day. Living on the road for 8 weeks with about 60+ other rigs and their horses, crews and dogs becomes a huge traveling gypsy camp. Even not riding, I had an incredible time. Then, in 2004, I got the chance to ride, from Cold Springs NV, to Rushcreek Ranch in Nebraska. It was different than in 2001, and I will say the 2001 trip was still more special to me. Different memories formed with each trip, neither of which I will ever forget. You can read about some of the Xp rides at the following links, including stories and photos. They were indeed, "trips of a lifetime".
