1. Be honest when you evaluate your horse to make sure that he has the
mind  and metabolics to be an endurance horse.  Just because they want
to run doesn't  always mean they should or that they can.

Kim, you bring up some very valid points in your post.  Dabney's model may
be ok for a horse that has the metabolic capability to keep up with his
mind and biomechanical capabilities, but those horses are the exception
rather than the rule.  If a horse is not coming down due to "excitement"
or is not eating because he is too busy checking out what is going on
around him, SOMETHING IS WRONG, pure and simple.  There may be something
medically wrong with him, or he may just not be well-suited to the sport. 
And letting him run until he crashes is not an acceptable alternative.
