Re: [RC] all-around backyard 4-H horses - Carol SuggsI definately agree with Ms. Dewees, 4H is about having fun with what ya got! Yeah for the back yard horse! My horses are used for ranching, roping, pleasure riding, local western and english shows, halter, showmanship and high county packing. I am a project leader for our horse project and I promote safety, horse handling basics and good sportsmanship in our program. At the second meeting I passed out little cards to my group of 19 kids that were MY RULES for them to follow while at my barn: CAROL'S HORSE RULES WE WILL NEVER GET ANGRY AT OUR HORSE WE WILL NOT JUDGE OTHERS WE WILL BE HONEST AND OPEN WE WILL NOT GIVE EXCUSES WE WILL USE OUR QUIET VOICES WE WILL NOT RUN AROUND OR THROW OBJECTS WE WILL NOT PUT A HORSES SAFTETY IN FRONT OF OUR OWN Having fun with our horses and exposing them and the kids to different events is what makes 4H fun and educational. Good sportsmanship seems to be lacking in a lot of events that I have attended lately...and I think that as adults we need to set a good example for our youth that are coming up in ANY sport. These are things that we can promote to kids whether they have a $100 horse or a $10,000 horse. We had SO MUCH FUN!!! Our community is kind of islolated so competition didn't get serious, and I liked that. The kids did a little showing, gaming, trail trials, trail rides, and parades. Mostly we just did fun things within our own club (crazy games, Halloween costume contests, Easter bonnet contests for the horses, Christmas caroling rides, horse cookie baking, scavenger hunts.) None of our kids had much money or very good horses, but we all had a great time! I wish I had been experienced in endurance then because some of the kids would have loved it, if they could scrape together money for entry fees. I also wish I had known about clicker training back then! I would have liked to have seen how they did with that technique. I bet they would have gotten pretty creative with their shaggy old backyard horses!
