Re: [RC] Prineville, Injured riders and horses - Truman PrevattA controlled start is not what a CTR does. A controlled start is where a lead ride takes the field of startes down the trail at a walk a distance and lets them go. The places it works well is where the trail near camp for some reason is not conducive to a typical start. For example you cross a paved road 1/2 mile from camp, you have to go 1/2 mile down a road to get to the trail. The trail leading out of camp is too narrow, too muddy, etc. for a normal start. It is a multiple use are and is congested with other users near camp. I've done a lot or rides with controlled starts and I've managed a few.The 2000 NC in Kentucky had a controlled start on the 50 becuase of the very muddy and slick hill you had to start on out of camp. It is a good tool and probably should be used more. Truman Chastain, Shannon L. wrote: What is a "controlled" start for an Endurance Ride. In the CTR group I belong to (MOTDRA) we start out separately 30 to 60 minutes apart out time is tracked from when we go out.
