Re: [RC] Kill clover? - Jennifer FleetAnother thing about clover is that (I hear) it can cause photosensitivity in some horses, resulting in horrible sunburn and even liver problems. My own horse, Shahtahr, has a big bald patch on his nose, where he used to have a white blaze - I bought him that way. He was kept on 80 acres of clover and alfalfa for most of his life, and my vet said that could have been why he burned so severely that the hair never grew back. :( Maybe Heidi can elaborate on this, if it's true or not? I guess I don't understand what's the problem with clover. other than causing a bad case of the 'slobbers' early in the summer, clover is a pretty good food for horses, in moderation. Depends on what kind of clover. Some can cause sufficient clotting disruption to cause pretty severe hemorrhage, and even death if there is some other extenuating circumstance. The mare I rode so many miles back in the 80s lost her first foal due to clover-induced hemorrhage...
