Re: [RC] Post-ride: Bandage or Not? - heidiI would like to know what riders' opinions are on post-ride bandaging. Some riders believe that it is absolutely necessary - with or without clay. Others have told me that it impedes circulation and encourages heat build up and walking is best. Is there a right answer? I'm a bit of the same opinion in general as "the other Karen" but to answer your question, no, there is not a right answer. I think that for the majority of horses, it is unnecessary, and in some cases could be more detrimental than not. The points Karen C brings up come to mind. That said, there ARE some horses who stock up post-ride, and who do benefit from it. In all my years in this sport, I've ridden one such horse. In retrospect, it was also in the days when we all tied to trailers, and since the stocking up would go away promptly upon arriving home and running around in the pasture as well, I suspect she might have benefitted just as much from being in a pipe corral at rides. I'd still say it is an individual decision, and one to make based on whether or not your horse shows you a need for it.
