[RC] White line - Julie FullerChristina,I got a gelding a few years ago for free because the owners had been told by their farrier that the horse had white line disease and would need resection of all four feet in the near future. This was more than they wanted to deal with, so they gave him away. My farrier was awestruck. "You got this horse free??!!!" He trimmed and shod the horse, told me to ride him. Tai was never lame at any time, though he did show some "rotten spots" between the hoof wall and the inner part of the hoof in three feet. I routinely use a solution of tintcure of iodine, venice turpentine and formaldehyde on all my horses feet.... more in wet weather, less to none in dry weather. In Tai's case, it took about 4 shoings and all evidence of "rotten spots" were gone. My farrier corrected his long toe, low heel syndrome (which wasn't bad) corrected his slightly clubbed front foot (it's still clubby, but much better balanced) and we even eventually got his other front foot to stop cracking, which surprised the farrier. Our horses are out 24/7 in a steep pasture. I don't feed anything special, mostly because the past couple years have been VERY tight financially, resulting in very little hard riding, and no shoes. Everyone has done wonderfully (Though I bet they aren't liking life today.... it's 20 degrees, 30 mph winds, gusts to 55 and FREEZING RAIN!) I'm very grateful the horses have weathered our lack of funds so well..... it's been one less thing to worry about!
