Re: [RC] wildlife sightings - Barbara McCraryOne animal in our experience has had more permanent influence on our horses than any other, is an Elephant Seal. Courage, my wonderful old endurance horse, long gone, was a pretty solid horse until the day he saw his first Elephant Seal. After all, it was only a large brown log on the beach...........until.....the large brown log reared up, dropped his proboscis into his open mouth, exhaled bursts of air (which resonate in the throat with a loud and deep honking noise peculiar only to this type of seal), and undulated like an inch worm off toward the surf. Mind you, a bull Elephant Seal can be up to 18' long and weigh up to 4 tons. Courage did an "ohmigosh" sort of spook and he was corrupted for the rest of his life. Every large rock on the desert was an Elephant Seal and required the appropriate spook in response. I refuse to take my present horse onto the beach, as his imagination is highly honed as it is, without the experience of seeing one of these seals.Barbara ----- Original Message ----- From: <winsumjo@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, May 13, 2005 2:54 PM Subject: [RC] wildlife sightings My one and only time to ride on the beach was New Years day 2 years ago.
