Re: [RC] [RC-Digest] wildlife encounters - heidiMy first ride off the property with my stallion after moving up here to the PNW we startled a herd of elk. My stallion is pretty durn green and you can bet MY heart rate went up when the elk went crashing past us. The stallion, on the other hand, just stood there with his ears up and watched them go... Of course, it wasn't until they'd disappeared that I remembered the camera in my saddlebag. Elk and deer are nearly daily occurrences here. I did get unhorsed once due to a deer popping up out of the brush right under my horse's nose. He's normally a good egg about stuff like that, but that one was just toooo close and toooo abrupt. We also have moose--so far I haven't run into one horseback, and I hope I don't--at least not in a confined area where I don't see her first. I've run into black bears in years past in this area, but so far none here at this place. What is fun to watch is in the winter when the elk try to come down into the fields to share the big bales with my mares. We have a herd of about 70 head that winters right in here. The mares will only let them get about so close--when they step over the imaginary line that the mares have defined as the "elk boudary" all the heads and tails go up and it looks like a cavalry charge. <g> Heidi =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
