It is "conventional wisdom", In other words rumor, that gaited horses have long term issues. There is a fair amount of bias out there against gaited horses in endurance. So any time a gaited horse comes up lame, it must be that "silly" gait. As the rider of two gaited endurance horses, I would like to see some research on this. I do know several specific examples of gaited horses that have been campaigned successfully into their late teens. That is anecdotal evidence, not proof. -paul L.
