Re: [RC] What to do with horses during storms - Mary Ann Spencer
In East Texas, also part of tornado territory, we
turn them out if able. A couple of yrs ago a tornado came thru about ten
miles from my place. I had nothing happen. Someone lost several
horses who were 'trapped' in the barn. Unpleasant but reality.
Doesn't mean no injuries out on pasture. Have heard of equines being hit
by lightning. Seems to be part of the overall risk of where one
lives. Calves in CO sometimes have their hooves frozen and fall
off. Good luck to all. mas

My
entire life experience with tornados is from watching the movie "Twister"
which I have seen a dozen times. <BG> In the movie, there is a
lot of flying debris on all sides of the tornado, sometimes at great
distance, which is very similar to the flying debris we get in our storms
down here. I still think a horse is better off being able to
see debris coming and using his natural instinct to run from it, than
being trapped in a barn where he cannot see what's coming (only hear it)
and cannot run, which must cause an unnatural and unpleasant state of
fear.
