Re: [RC] Recommended feed rations from the grain factoryWrong!!! - Dabney Finch

Interesting post, Steve.

I agree with you right up to the last line. This is because after dealing with my tie up horse (Orzo) I began feedling all my horses the way I feed him: they get grain according to how much work they've done, and only immediately after work.

This can mean during a multi-day or after a tough 100 practically free choice! They seem to know just what their body needs and will leave it and go to hay (or, often, eat hay first), nibble on it through the night, and leave what they don't want.

I've never had a problem with this practice (knock wood.), although I have when I fed even moderate amounts every day regardless of work.

I'd be interested to hear from other riders on this topic...

All I see on every bag of grain is way too much a ration to give any horse and that bag would be gone on no time and nothing but problems with your horse I myself use little or none and cut the ration recommend to 1-2 lbs only. And not every day For guaranteed whets inside best to do your own adding. Fat etc.

I'd like them to come out here and ride my horse on the labels recommended
feed ration!
This is mainly why we have colic's at rides the horse digs in and we walk
away without doing a slow introduction to a hard day work . The oh I feel
sorry he really worked hard so he gets more food all at once, sound
familiar?
