However having grazing animals preyed on by predators is a natural way to insure the strongest survive...in any case, we are not talking about YOUR horses. I've tried to stay out of this debate, but I have to respond to this. I've not noticed predators being particularly discriminating as to whether their prey is feral, wild, or domestic. If anything, they rather like domestic stock, because they are caught up in enclosures and easy to chase down. Doesn't matter if we are talking cattle, horses, sheep, or pet dogs. Easy prey is easy prey, and predators such as wolves and cougars will take what is easy to come by. So yes, we ARE talking about Ed's horses here--and mine, and yours, and those belonging to anyone else whose property is accessible to predators. Fact: One of my fairly close neighbors lost a yearling Quarter Horse filly a couple of years ago to one of the reintroduced wolves--it was in a pole round pen by her house, and the kill was documented. There are frequent well-documented cases of cougar kills of domestic horses, and various predator kills of other sorts of livestock. It IS fact that predators are perfectly willing to kill domestic livestock--that isn't just Ed's "opinion."
