Re: [RC] Feeding at Holds - DreamWeaverFeed them whatever they will eat at a hold. Getting the gut full is the first priority. Feeding the "right" thing is secondary. ditto that! Plus, sometimes it helps if after a few minutes they are just barely nibbling to take them for a walk, even if just over to a water trough and back. That seems to help stimulate them to eat again, and often I find mine will drink when they go to the water and back. I don't usually bother with beet pulp at the out checks. Locally it seems I can only find it in pellets anymore, and that takes awhile to soak. It usually isn't convenient to send it already soaked in a crewbag to an out check, so I just send baggies of dry feed that I can add water to. I like using complete feeds the best. The horses all go thru phases where they have a preference for one thing over another. I usually send the large gallon sized baggies full of feed in my crewbag and most of the time have three types of things for them to choose from in addition to hay. Usually it's a senior feed, manna-pro complete 10 (their favorite all time food) and plain oats. Another baggie usually has apples and carrots in it. I just want them to eat, and don't usually care what (within reason). They almost always want what the horse next to them has!
