[RC] Feeding at Holds - Peter HarperI been having a little trouble getting my mare to eat at holds. Our usual routine is to let her graze on any available grass and to feed soaked beet pulp/Ultium mixture and coastal Bermuda grass hay. I don't electrolyte until just before we go out otherwise she just stands there with a resentful look and doesn't eat. At our last ride we had a 60 minute hold after the first 25 miles. She turned her nose up at the beet pulp and just grazed a little. At the end of the hold as we were walking over to the water she made a bee-line for what looked like soaked oats and sweet feed. She doesn't get sweet feed at home, I feed high fat Ultium and beet pulp. The lack of eating at the hold seemed to show at her last two vet checks she was a B, B- on gut sounds and A's on hydration. I've seen a lot of discussion on the list about not feeding too much sugar or carbohydrates to endurance horses. Would a 50/50 soaked sweet feed/beet pulp mixture be OK? The other thing I've found she'll eat are alfalfa cubes. I thought of experimenting with an beet pulp/alfalfa mash. I keep debating if it would be better to feed something she'll eat. I'd appreciate some advice. We've got a 50 coming up in two weeks and I'd like to improve on her gut sounds. Cheers, Pete in TX __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
